Becoming a Wedding Planner
Do you find that you are
good with people. Do you find that you are naturally
interested in the details of every wedding you have
attended? Do you enjoy organising events or special
occasions? Do you like working with temperamental
people on the most important days of their lives? If you
answered yes to these questions, then you might like to
consider becoming a wedding planner.
As far as
I am aware and from I have seen there is no official
degree or college major in wedding planning. A business major
is probably as close as you can get. However, a college
education is not required. Of course like any business a good
business head is a must. One of the best ways to
become a wedding planner is to find a wedding planning company
that will take you on as an intern, probably unpaid. Yes,
unpaid. Few if any wedding planners will teach you the game if
they have to pay you too. You work for the experience and if
you are very good you might get a job after the internship.
Working with a good wedding planner is the best way to learn
the business.
A good
intern watches and learns. She rarely speaks unless spoken to
and takes notes whenever she can. At first a wedding planning
intern does all of the menial work. In fact she does what she
is told at all times. In time she might even begin to show some
initiative as she gains experience.
Most
interns start by unpacking boxes, cleaning, and running
errands. Because so many brides today want unusual table
settings, many have to purchase everything used at the
reception site. All of the settings have to be unpacked and
then washed. That is scuttle work but it has to be done.
Arranging the items for the decorators is another boring but
necessary job.
After
awhile, an intern actually starts the process of becoming a
wedding planner. As she gains experience, she will even be
given some important jobs such as lining up the wedding
parties, making sure all events are on time, and calming
children in the wedding party.
On the
day of the wedding, an intern might have to run errands. If
anything is forgotten or misplaced, the interns make the run.
The wedding planner cannot leave the wedding venue so the
internet does the running. From getting extra tissue to buying
hosiery, the intern’s errands are each important. Remember; the
devil is in the details.
The good
intern who is truly interested in becoming a wedding planner
will finish her internship with a job. Even if you don’t get an
offer from your intern job, you can apply to other wedding
planner companies because you are now entry level experienced.
With a lot of work and creativity, your time will come. You can
be a wedding planner and work for yourself. Well, actually you
will be working for the bride, her mother, her father, the
groom and his family, and all of the invitees. I think you get
the picture. Being a wedding fairy godmother isn’t easy but it
is simply one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. If you
are really good, you can become a Hollywood wedding planner.
Now that is the big time.
